Beaverton Fire Stirs the Neighborhood

Fire fighters arrived, leaping trucks over speed bumps to get to the fire which was quickly burning out of control. Well over four trucks established a location to set up and local police corded off the streets to keep spectators back for their own safety. Trees began to burn as did nearby properties.

Saturday February the 18th of 2012 a fire broke out at one of my neighbor’s homes.  My family and I had just sat down to eat dinner when I smelt something that I thought might be burning plastic.  I informed my wife and we both began searching our house for the source.  My wife made her way towards the front of our home and saw a blazing inferno outside the window.  The fire was about fifty yards away from our house but you could still feel the heat through our door.

My wife tried calling 9-1-1 but other neighbors had already noticed the fire and flooded the emergency lines with calls according to a later report from local news and authorities.  She could not get through.  Cinders and smoke blew directly towards our house and all house in line with us.  Hot ashes fell on rooftops, including ours.  I ran around back and began dousing my roof with a garden hose out of panic.

Fire fighters arrived, leaping trucks over speed bumps to get to the fire which was quickly burning out of control.  Well over four trucks established a location to set up and local police corded off the streets to keep spectators back for their own safety.  Trees began to burn as did nearby properties.  A cop first shot some video before approaching me on my porch and telling me to evacuate my family.

It was very frightening for my family and I.  It looked as though the fire was going to spread and take out more homes as a tall tree began to erupt in flames.  The fire fighters moved in tactically and used skill beyond what local news has shown in broadcasts.  It was like watching an elite team of skilled soldiers move in on their enemy and eliminate the threat with deadly precision.  They had the fire contained in a matter of moments.

The fire continued to erupt over and over which lead local neighbors to wonder if it was arson.  Management claimed this was the third fire at the same property in only a few short months.  One of the prior fires had been caused by faulty wiring but another had been arson.  As far as I know authorities have not issued their findings on the cause of this fire.  I suggest you follow Koin 6 news or another local news organization in the Portland, Oregon area for future details.

The fire decimated the house it started at.  It damaged a large tree and destroyed a car port at a home next door.  This is all the damage that I can see from my front yard.  According to local news, the family that owned the house is being aided by the local Red Cross.
