Interior Decorator to the Stars

Berkus is known to have commented that he didnÂ’t know this was going to be his calling, he just knew he was sensitive to his surroundings.

Born Nathan Jay Berkus on September, 17, 1971 in Orange County, California. He is Jewish and openly gay. He started working in interior design right out of high school. After he interned at Dominique Aurientis in Paris and Sotheby’s in Chicago he went to study at Lake Forest College in Chicago. He graduated with degrees in Sociology and French.

Berkus is known to have commented that he didn’t know this was going to be his calling, he just knew he was sensitive to his surroundings. He used to drive his parents nuts by redecorating his room every month. He would use his allowance to go buy things.

He opened a firm, Nate Berkus Associates in 1995, at the age of 24, it requires clients with a budget of $50,000. He quickly became the decorator to hire for retail stores, restaurants and residences.

Berkus has received many awards including the Design Editor of Chicago Social Magazine in 2000 and received the 2002 Design and Style Award for his contribution to American design. The Home Beautiful’s Next Wave Design Talent 2003, the Crane Business Magazine’s 40 Under 40 to watch 2003.

His former partner Fernando Bengoechea was killed(presumed dead) in the tsunami that hit Sri Lanka while the couple were there vacationing in December 2004. Berkus appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show on January, 17, 2005 to discuss the loss of his love.

In November 2005 Hyperion Books published his book Home Rules, Transform the Place You Live into a Place You’ll Love(ISBN-1-4013-0137-1) a step-by-step guide in home decoration.

Linens n’ Things has sold his merchandise since 2005. He also has a line of furniture on HSN, the Home Shopping Network.

Berkus hosted a short lived reality show, Oprah’s Big Give, which premiered March, 2, 2008 and ended April of the same year.

The Nate Berkus Show which started in September 2010 is co-produced by Oprah’s production company Harpo Productions with Sony Pictures Television. He had been on her show 60 times and did over 127 makeovers, re-designing her living spaces along with Jerry O’Connell’s and Kristy Alley’s.

His show includes several home style segments, ideas on bringing homes from drab to fab and interviews with such guests as Dolly Parton, Elizabeth Edwards and his mom and HGTV/DIY personality, Nancy Golden.

He is currently involved in a relationship with Bally Shoe designer Brian Atwood.
